Washington, D.C. - This Saturday, July 1, Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (CA-32), is encouraging civic participation by celebrating National Citizenship Day. Free citizenship workshops, are scheduled to take place in various states, including Arizona, California, Illinois, New York, and Texas. Individuals eligible for citizenship will receive assistance with the citizenship application process. Approximately eight million permanent residents are currently eligible for U.S citizenship.
“National Citizenship Day will help thousands of people around the country take the first critical step towards becoming a U.S. citizenship so they can too have a say on issues impacting their communities,” said Congresswoman Solis. “Issues like education, health care and immigration are too important to allow others make decisions that will impact our communities. The time to take action is now.”
In order to apply for citizenship, an individual must:
Be at least 18 years old.
Be a legal permanent resident for at least five years.
Be able to read, write, speak, and understand basic English (exceptions apply).
Have a basic knowledge of U.S. history and government.
If an individual is married to a U.S. citizen, he or she must be a legal permanent resident for at least three years.
