SOLIS HOSTS HOUSING FORUM

PROVIDES INFORMATION FOR FIRST-TIME HOME BUYERS

Baldwin Park, Calif. - Today, Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (CA-32) hosted a housing forum to provide prospective first-time home buyers in the 32nd Congressional District with information about how to apply for federal first-time buyers programs, explore financing options, and avoid predatory lending schemes.

“Becoming a home owner is one of the most valuable investments a family or individual can make.  Yet first-time home buyers in our community are faced with many challenges, including increasingly high home prices, reduced federal support for housing programs, and a lack of access to home buying and financing options,” said Congresswoman Solis.  “Hosting these types of events is key to empowering and educating first-time buyers about resources available to them as they take this important step towards financial security.”

According to reports, home prices in Los Angeles County have increased nearly 9% over the past year, while family income continues to drop and the President and Congress have called for budget cuts to federal housing programs.  The median house price in Los Angeles County was $568,400 in the last quarter of 2005.

Speakers at the forum included Stephen Clark of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Daniele Zeeda of Fannie Mae, Nanet Davila of SCE Federal Credit Union, Vincenzo Martinelli of Washington Mutual, and Alejandra Cedillo, a housing expert and an attorney with Duran and Flanagan.

Congresswoman Solis is working to provide a new direction for American families by protecting programs that provide home-buying guidance, assistance and support. Solis has consistently opposed cuts to fair housing programs, the Community Development Block Grant Program, and other initiatives that help make home-ownership an attainable goal for all Americans.
