| Rosemead, Calif. - In commemoration of Women’s History Month, Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis, Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, honored 13 women from the 32nd Congressional District for distinguish service to their communities.
The honorees include:
Audrey Travis (South El Monte) serves as Volunteer Chaplain for the Temple City Sheriff’s Station and Los Angeles County Jail.
Dorothy Smith (Duarte) is a longtime member of Duarte’s Promise and President of the Duarte Community Service Council.
Socorro Duran (City Terrace) organizes violence suppression programs in her community in conjunction with local law enforcement authorities.
Anna Araujo (East Los Angeles) volunteers as the Co-Chair of the Eastside Coordinating Council.
Lillian Kawaratani (Monterey Park) has been teaching citizenship classes for seven years; more than 650 of her students have become U.S. citizens.
Mary Ellen Perea (Rosemead) has dedicated her time to challenging retail stores wanting to come in to her community to provide livable wages and protecting quality of life in the area.
Laura Butanda (Azusa) and Linda Meave (Azusa) were instrumental in planning the city’s Vietnam Wall exhibit.
Cathy Glenn (West Covina), volunteers for the West Covina Senior Center.
Irene Ponce (El Sereno) an animal rights and environment activist works towards making the community more harmonious.
Irene Test (Baldwin Park) has been an active volunteer in her community for 35 years.
Vera Durazo (El Monte) has volunteered to help the sight impaired and homebound elderly for three decades.
Gloria Gomez (South El Monte) has provided eight years of service securing meals for the disabled and is an active member of the South El Monte Senior Center.
