| Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (CA-32) joined millions of Americans in celebrating Cinco de Mayo. This day marks the historic triumph of the Mexican people over the French Army in the battle of Puebla in 1862.
“Today, we celebrate the importance of Latinos in this country, specifically the contributions Mexican Americans have made and continue to make and how their achievements strengthen our nation,” said Congresswoman Solis. “This date is of special significance because it reminds us that all peoples -- regardless of their race or color -- need freedom, liberty and self-determination and that all cultures are worthy of respect. In the United States, it is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage Mexican Americans have brought with them."
Latinos are the fastest-growing group of color in the United States, Congresswoman Solis noted. They are leading a record number of small businesses -- 1.6 million, with annual revenues of more than $200 billion. The fastest-growing small business sector is Latina-owned firms. Today, there are 26 Latino Members in the United States Congress, including 21 Democrats. The majority of them are Mexican-Americans, representing constituencies from all around the country.
Congresswoman Solis also noted that she has sponsored two pieces of legislation highlighting the positive contributions Mexican Americans have made through history. The César Estrada Chávez Study Act would honor Chávez (H. Res. 127) by authorizing the U.S. Department of Interior to study significant lands in Chávez’s life and movement for inclusion into the National Park Service.
In addition, Congresswoman Solis also has introduced H. RES. 787, a resolution honoring civil rights leader Dolores Huerta and her commitment to the improvement of labor conditions for farmwork families and the rights of women and children.
Today, we say gracias to the Mexican America community for making our economy stronger and our culture more vibrant.”
